Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction

Hi Tahira, welcome :slightly_smiling_face:
I’m pretty much the same as you, as well as having Cerebellar Ataxia, I have Vestibular issues, I have longterm eye problems and BPPV. I’ve been for Vestibular Therapy, which comprised of numerous sessions of the Epley Manoeuvre to try and realign ‘crystals’…but it hasn’t made any difference for me.

It does make moving around a challenge, apart from feeling and looking drunk my eyesight is compromised by Cataracts and the waiting list for treatment (NHS) gets longer and longer. But I’ve been told I may not be a suitable candidate because of my history with Iritis, Cataract Surgery could actually make my eyesight worse.

In the past I’ve tried several different strengths of Prism in my glasses to control double vision, before having a Botox injection and finally Strabismus Surgery…which gave amazing results :slightly_smiling_face:

There’s a high probability that many members here are coping with very similar challenges, ataxia symptoms can vary enormously relating to severity and progression but several basic symptoms are common.

Hi Beryl,

Thank you for the reply it puts me to rest knowing I am not alone, are you able to carry out any physical exercises for muscle strength physiotherapy etc. I am having a little difficulty with it I am sorry to about your Cataract please stay strong and positive.

Kind regards,
Tahira

:slightly_smiling_face: I don’t have a regular exercise routine, mainly due to instability. Although I’m aware that even chair based exercising can be achievable, and keep muscles supple.
I feel compelled to say…at this stage I feel regretful that I haven’t stayed active enough in the past, pushing against Vestibular problems is said to be the only way to deal with them, to get the body used to coping.
:slightly_smiling_face: So I would urge anybody else to just keep moving …no matter what sensation is brought on. Sitting still to cope with the problem only leads to further issues with stiffness and pain.

Hi Beryl,

Thank you so much for your information much appreciated keep well.

Regards
Tahira
