Chantix improves walking for SCA3

Linda,

I agree with Shoaib, when a side effect of a drug outweighs the benefits it’s time to regroup and rethink current therapies.

I was referring to ataxia as a “minor” because almost by definition a side effect is not as serious as a neuro condition. Side effects can be serious but they are rarely as serious as an underlying, chronic condition. Even better, the majority of the time they can be stopped by stopping the medication, they are not chronic or incurable.

Anti-seizure meds have come a long way in the past 20 years, maybe it’s time for you to revisit what you’re doing. No one should have to live with an unacceptable level of side effects.

:smirk: It’s said that, if a medication is thought to be at the root of the problem, discontinuing it early enough should stabilise the patient. Such as in an Acquired Ataxia due to medication.

A person coping with Idiopathic Cerebellar Ataxia, and that’s what you’ve previously indicated lin-da, has the same challenging symptoms as most other types of ataxia, and they’re distinguishable from any side-effect of medication.

Do you still need anti-seizure medication, has your Neurologist ruled out Ataxias associated with seizures  xB
