I had Genetic testing as I have kids and I needed to know. It’s just a simple blood draw and I got my results in a few weeks. I have SCA6 and it Autosominal dominant which means my kids, sister, niece etc have a 50% chance of getting it. I’m lucky tho as I live in the U.K so it was free.
Good luck. It’s just peace of mind xxx
We've had genetic testing done for MUCH LESS MONEY than you're being told. We Fed Ex'ed the blood to the genetic testing facility of the University of Washington. Let me know if you have trouble locating the services. I'm writing off the top of my head and can't remember but will happily find out how we went about it for your needs. I do know that my doctor didn't know what the order should look like. So I contacted the University's genetic center and asked them. They specifically told me to have the purple vial used in the blood collection and to have the facility mail it to them. I also found a site on the internet that I filled out for the doctor and included with the blood. The cost of Fed Ex'ing the blood was $150. the cost of the test was about $300.
I should mention that we knew we were testing for SCA6. Your doc is sure you have EA2 so I imagine you would only test for that? However, if we had gone for an array, I believe the cost quoted was $600, which is still a lot cheaper than the $5 - 20K you're being quoted.
