Hormones and Ataxia

Hi everyone,

Can I ask if hormones effect ataxia, I have been told I am now going through the menopause and my hormones are going haywire.

I've also been having one of the longest attacks in a few years and wondering if the two are connected.

Deb

Hi Deb
If you have a Neurologist, I would ask them. Ataxia is such a rare disease your pharmacist or PCP may not know.

Thanks Suzi,

I've just emailed them, but they are not great at replying to either emails or phonecalls at the moment.

I’m going through the same. I’m not sure if it effects Ataxia but I’m drinking more water and still exercising. Guess I’ll ask my neurologist next time. Menapause and Ataxia does not mix very well.

This is all too familiar to me! I am going to ask my neurologist about it as we

It effects me too big time! I asked and they don't really know (surprise) but I really think it does allot!

Interesting! I went through early menopause at the age of forty-two…and that is when my ataxia first reared its ugly head…i never experienced any of the textbook symptoms of menopause…not one…but the ataxia showed up…makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Yes!!!!!! :-)

My symptoms started in early forties but increased significantly after menopause. It was THEN that me GP told me that it happens frequently if you have a disability, it gets worse after menopause. Had I known this and how much more disabled I would be, I might have considered hormone options.

Thank you all for your replies, it appears that there may well be a connection between hormones and my attacks. I've contacted the hospital and will wait and see what they say.

I take black cohosh for hot flashes and haven't noticed any problems with the ataxia.

I Also went thru early menopause at 39. Menopause was baaadddd! Still on hormones at 54.

Hi Deb I have A0A2 my Neurologist said one of the common factors with A0A2 is early Menopause. I am now 27 and so far all is well.

I am wondering the same . When I had attacks years ago, they only last a day, but I noticed they were about a week before my cycle. I had a hysterectomy in 2008 and now at 45 I have had full blown symptoms since Sept. I walk with a cane, have postural tremors, intention tremor, off balance , amplified hearing in right ear, have no balance when I stand or close my eyes.Occasionally impaired speech, nagging cough. Unusual high anxiety( Major menopause symptom)Memory loss

My Ataxia came out when I was pregnant. I went through my whole life being so athletic and physical. Then, at 36 yrs old this horrible disease came around. I have went to many specialists, and they tell me that when there is a major hormonal change that major things can happen to the body. I am not going through menopause yet, so I don’t really know. All. I know is that this disease effects everyone different. Good Luck!!

Thank you both for replying :)
