I’m new to this site

My name is Paula I have ataxia and breast cancer

Hi Paula, welcome :slightly_smiling_face:
I’ve had breast cancer myself….but this was over a decade after being diagnosed with Cerebellar Ataxia.

 Did you already have a diagnosis of ataxia …..prior to breast cancer. Or, did ataxia start after breast cancer diagnosis - surgery & treatment.

I think the ataxia came first because I had all the symptoms for it and then the cancer this all happened in 2021. In 2022 is when I was diagnosed with breast cancer and just last year they said I had ataxia. At first they thought it was MS. They still running more test. I really don’t think they really know what is going on.

I’d had Vestibular issues going back to to the 1990s..but my GP didn’t refer me for investigation until I started having falls. Only then, in 2011 was I diagnosed with Cerebellar Ataxia.
My cancer diagnosis came in 2014…suddenly ..out of the blue I found a lump.

 It’s not unusual for actual diagnosis of ataxia to be in question..the symptoms can sometimes be vague, and ‘overlap’ different Neurological conditions.
At some point your Neurologist will advise having genetic testing, to try and pinpoint the reason for ataxia symptoms.
It’s worth having this done, because some ataxias such as those caused by a deficiency or autoimmune type ..can be treated.

Good to know. Thanks for your feedback.

Although I’m male and not really concerned with breast cancer , I originally was diagnosed with MS also. I went through a barbaric test called Pneumoencephlogram. That was before they invented MRI and was misdiagnosed.

Good morning
I’m still getting test done because they really don’t know what is going on with me.

Best of luck. We all have our fingers crossed for you.
