Earliest signs of ataxia

Does anyone remember the earliest signs of ataxia? If so , even mild, what were they?

I remember about 8 years ago having dizzy spells. They passed so I put it down to stress. Next I had double vision but the doctor told me to go and get my eyes tested. It took some time for the symptoms to be more worrying.
I hope this helps. Regards. Anna

It happened literally overnight, I went into work and noticed I was stumbling into things, like I was drunk. I`ve narrowed it down to early-mid October 2012, though when I think back, various symptoms started to show years before then, but wouldn`t have been recognised as such then.I diagnosed myself long before any "specialist" confirmed my fears. I have more recently been diagnosed as having Multiple System Atrophy, and am just hoping the research team come up with a cure soon.

1. I could not walk on tight edges (like mountain trails)

2. Could not wear pants without support

3. Could not walk with full cup of coffee without spiliing it.

4 Could not get up after sitting for long time without support

These are few mine

For me, it was a gradual loss of balance. What got me going to figure it out was my karate sensi who told me "after 4 years training I've seen people improve or stay the same. You are the first I've seen get worse - let's figure out why". That was almost 8 years ago!

getting up & down too fast, dizziness when turning or bending over, walking too fast, gait problems, headaches, falling, balance. everyone is different when it comes to the symptoms

I presume that was when you started having tea instead?

I know you're serious. I can't do these things either. I fall off the kerb, I bump into lamp posts, I get dizzy watching telly, I can't remember this that and the other, weird things happen, etc etc. But I have to laugh at myself to keep the days sunny.

Yes we are all in same boat

Being "dizzy" after I took a walk, or while walking. When house cleaning. Then the double vision started. Now it is chronic fatigue and Nystagmus almost all day.

catching my shoulders on door frames, being a little unsteady walking to the bathroom in the night, typing getting messed up putting letters in the wrong order.

My dad was going to retire and thought he should have a physical. During the physical they found his balance was off so they did additional testing and found the ataxia. When he was describing it to me a light bulb went off and I thought it sounded a lot like me. I went and was tested and found I had it also. Now years later I can look back to high school when I thought I was a klutz was probably the ataxia. Only within the last few years my writing and speech have been affected. My balance has remained the same. It's probably even a little better since I went through physical therapy.

The first time I knew there was something seriously wrong and discovered it was ataxia was when I had some sort of 'stroke' - not technically a stroke, but very similar in some ways. But there had been countless little things like cross-eyes that I'd put down to something else. Reading other answers and other discussions, I think a lot of us had these undiagnosed little problems and I can't remember which was the first for me - possibly some facial muscles packing up. Probably the hospital doctors knew decades before I did that I had ataxia.

Those were my first symptoms too, the stroke like symptoms. For the past two years, iv had an issue with clinching my jaw together. Didnt really notice until I started on gabapentin. The clinching went away after the meds kicked in. I notice alot of the old symptoms coming back when I go off the medication.

Medications were for Ataxia ? If so what was the name !

I just had my symptoms progress every day and went from a slight limp to now in a wheelchair at home or when I go shopping. My neurologist put me on lyrica and I had bad thoughts while on it. depression and suicidal problems. So I quit lyrica and just don't take any meds that help with ataxia.

There are meds for the symtoms

The doctor I have prescribed lyrica, then ambien then klonopin. These are bad drugs for most people some if you stop abruptly for some reason and you have been taking them for awhile will cause seizures. some will think of suicide and one will cause you to wake in the nite and get in the car and drive around, or other dangerous things.
