Hi all

How do you all get time to excercise so much ? I find by the time I have got my boys to school got showerd and dressed done some washing its time for my nap and then the boys are back.

Bob

Dear Bob bird, I, like Magrat, am retired, so I exercise daily at different times. Sometimes (usually twice weekly) I go to a wellness center I belong to to exercise my muscles using various weight machines. At home I do floor exercises (yoga and pilates or just stretches) and exercises for balance. I do all a bit at a time as It makes me more tired. I can see where having young children at home makes exercise more difficult! Maybe you can involve your children in some activity/exercise that you can all do together! Good for you AND good for them! Just a thought..., ;o)

I found simple things like doing laundry - when doing towels I roll them a sqeeze them, with my hands and then between my knees. At first it was 5 minutes here and there. Then I got cheap strength-band which I use while sitting watching TV, It helps with arms and core.

Dear Mach6, Brain stimulation sounds very interesting! How is it done and have you noticed any difference in your symptoms thus far? Please keep us posted..., ;o)

I stopped taking all the meds I was on and now my speech has returned to normal and I haven’t had a day or two in bed like I used to.
I have an exercise bike that I’ve had for about a year and all I’ve done is sit on it. !!!
My mind is fully active just my occasional tiredness. I’m fighting it and it’s not going to win.

That is so terrific, Beverly!

Yes in the short time i have been with Dr. Cramer i have seen changes,,, gargling and humming,,,, may seem minor though I have problem with swallowing and speech, and now I can gargle and hum not all the time , though better than it was. walking is getting better as well, slow though and not far, though the change is there. getting energy would be a welcome change,,,and the cognitive..

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just ordered the book from Amazon. Until today, I had not heard of Heinrich Frankel. I have CA and was doing some general googling on causes, excercises, progression, etc. and came across Dr. Frenkel. His Wikipedia site did not list this book. I then did a search on Discussions and you immediately popped up!

Such a wonderful day and such wonderful people here! Again, thank you so very much!

Frenkel exercises are excellant for ataxia.I recently purchased a book on Amazon called "The Treatment of Tabetic Ataxia By Means Of Systemic Exercise" by Heinrich S. Frenkel. It was printed in 1902 in German, but translated and edited in English. It actually shows the exercises, which, for me is helpful, as I'm very visual..., ;o)

Please let me know which one to buy , On Amazon there are many

I don't exercise at all now but I try to do all I can, I am male 81 yrs old and I do some cooking, do all the shopping , do laundry and clean around the house, When I clean kitchen I get on the floor and do it with a sponge and the same with the bathroom. Once I am on the floor I have a hard time getting up but its practice that is good for you I try to make notes at night for what needs done tomorrow but I do keep the list short and if I don't get to it there is always the next day. We got a couple of steam type cleaners (shark) and when we have energy we do the floors with it but not too often it seems. I try to pick a small job in the kitchen every day like the stove or the tile counter or the refer and it keeps me moving. I do use a wheelchair when out shopping as I am like slow motion on crutches and the stores here put the toilets in the far corner of the store and I would be in trouble pushing a shopping cart. I have a small house and have to rush to get the bath here. Jerry

Jerry, you are fantastic! Thank you for sharing.

I am female, 74 years old and live alone - have CA. I did take a balance exercise class that was offered thru my HMO and it helped. The trouble I ran into was that once the class was over, I had a hard time staying motivated to continue the exercises - (actually, totally failed at motivation and stopped exercising). When I leave home, I walk with a cane - at home, inside, I do not use it.

Good News: Like you, I do all I can each day - I keep a To-Do-List and cross off each completed task - some days are better than others. I live in an apt. and there is plenty to do to keep up the cleaning. Unlike you, grocery shopping is relatively easy for me cuz pushing the shopping cart insures my balance.

Bad News: Some days I am so fatigued and apathetic that for the most part, I hang out on the couch and read or watch t.v. I don't know what causes this fatigue and apathy, but it is REAL and have learned that it is common with CA patients.

Again, thanks for posting!

Book lover sitting and watching TV or sitting at the computer does cause blood clots and it happened to me on fathers day when I had blood clots in the lungs and now I am on warfarin so we have to be aware of this especially when we get older. I still spend hours at the TV and computer though. Jerry

I did not know that, Jerry. Thank you for sharing that information. What I failed to mention is that I am starting a new balance exercise class this week. I recently joined a Sr. organization that offers many things, exercise classes being one of them. I do know that being involved with people is extremely beneficial and because I live alone, I tend to isolate. Interacting with others helps keep me motivated.
