New here

Hi, my name is Will. I’m 37 years old and from New Orleans, LA. My mother has Ataxia SCA1. I havent been tested yet. My grandmother had it as well but further back then that we are not 100% sure which part of the family tree it came from. I remember my grandmother saying that her father may have had it as they remembered him being off balanced before he died but he wasn’t that old when he passed so it wouldnt have been bad by then. Also back then no one knew about the disease. I was hoping to do some research and possibly connect with other distant family members who tie back into the same blood line. I am working on ancestry.com right now and will make an another post later with a list of last names to see if anyone else here recognizes them for possibly family tree matches.

Hi Will, and a Huge welcome to this site! I was diagnosed 10 years ago with Sporadic Cerebellar Ataxia (non-hereditary/unknown cause), although I believe I had small symptoms starting 8 years before that. No one in my family, as far back as we know, has/had ataxia, except me. I live in Michigan, and am many years older than you at 59. Anyway, this is a great site for support and understanding, as the people on here are wonderful! You are not alone in your journey! ;o)

nice to meet everyone.
