I was diagnosed with ataxia 10 years ago. Up until about 3 years ago, I was able to walk inside and outside my home. I took a bad fall outside my home, so I started using a cane for more stability, as falling is not my idea of a good time...,ha!. Therefore, I able to walk inside my home (extremely carefully) without it, but use it when I leave my home. I would think a walker and/or rollater would be the next step between a cane and a wheelchair. I attend physical therapy 2 x's weekly for an hour each time, and do exercises for strength and balance at home. For whatever it's worth, I'm trying to keep my muscles as strong as possible for however long is meant to be! My best to you...,;o)
I've looked at tricycles, it is possible to get one with the 2 wheels at the front,
they're specifically for people with balance problems.
Thanks Beryl! I'd like to get a trike, so it's helpful to know that it's also possible to get two wheels in the front! ;o)
I've seen pictures of a recumbent bike--or trike--with 2 wheels in front. You sort of lie down in it. Wish I could afford one or find a used one, It looks like it would be a good bike for us.
I know, I used to think I could easily manage one of those. Then, I realised for me lying
down/turning my head etc is something I intentionally avoid, I'm much better keeping as
vertical as possible! So, if I ever get round to it, I would get a tricycle, I can't remember
whether there was a folding one, to put in the car. Where I live it isn't ideal to ride one,
people drive much too fast, and you can't really use the pavement.
You might get a used one on Ebay....?
