Totally tired

Hi Again Beverley, I already responded, but after reading other posts, thought I'd put my two cents worth in. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, at the same time of my diagnosis of ataxia (ten years ago). I wondered why I was always tired. Yes, part of it was due to ataxia, although having sleep apnea on top of that certainly didn't help. My neurologist says many people with a neurological disease suffer from sleep apnea...,who knew? One never reaches the all important REM sleep. Apparently, I stopped breathing 67 times per hour. Anyway, I use a C-Pap machine at night, and it has made a huge difference! Yes, I get tired from my ataxia, but at least it's not compounded by sleep apnea! Hope you're doing better these days, as your excess tiredness may be from a combination of things. After all, you work full-time, which is exhausting in itself! ;o)

good you can sleep well, I suffered a quite serious brain injury over 20 years ago. When I'm very tired I go into a very deep sleep for a couple of hours, then I wake up, think I need a wee. Go a bit, then can't get back to sleep again, so I'm tired the next night.....................

I’m doing a 6wk gluten challenge prior to a blood test, so I don’t know whether it’s actually
a response to gluten or not, but I am exhausted.
I slept exceptionally well last night, so that’s not the reason for it, so therefore I assume it must
be Ataxia related.
It’s a lovely Autumn day here, so thinking fresh air might help, I decided to rake up some
leaves.
I ended up totally demoralised. It was a case of shuffle forward, rake half heartedly and
then lean on the rake and groan.
The mind wants one thing but the body isn’t in tandem!
Desperate to go to the toilet, I managed to get back to the house.
The strangest thing is, and this never fails. Once I’ve been sitting down for while, I feel
much better, almost capable of taking anything on, then I get to my feet and it all kicks off
again! xB

Hi Beryl

I am looking forward to Sunday as I am taking Charlie my hubby away for 5 days to a lovely cottage. No kids no dogs, just peace and quiet. Bliss

Hi Bev!
Sounds like heaven! Hope you both have a lovely relaxing time and just
enjoy each others company! xB

So here I am again, in bed, very tired and have been for nearly two weeks now. Had a 5 day break with my hubby and all we did was sleep. I feel so sorry for him he is my rock however; I feel his patience is wearing thin. 5 days break,no kids, no work, no stress, sadly to say, no sex either. I have no libido at all
And haven’t for a long while. Is this Ataxia or just me ?

Hi Bev!

I was hoping to hear that after your break, things would start to look up, if you know

what I mean. Just the two of you, able to concentrate on each other in a relaxed

atmosphere. But, that doesn't always do the trick does it? When you're really

tired nothing works, all you actually long for is sleep.

Not to give too much information but things are pretty much the same with me,

and have been for years. My menopause finished when I was 54, my lack of

interest began after I had my second child, maybe it was an hormonal thing

combined with the onset of ataxia.

I suppose luckily for me my husband has been so wrapped up in his work

that he's tired himself, and all he wants is sleep. What can anybody advise

with this sort of problem, it's not really a case of mind over matter is it, you

don't expect to have to think about it in a regimented manner.

Maybe you can broach the subject with him, or not. As it happens my

husband does not have a 'feminine side' if you know what I mean, he has

difficulty opening up and discussing personal problems, where as I would

discuss it till the cows come home! But that's women for you, we like

to talk and thrash something out. xB

Hello Beverley,
Just like Beryl, I am sorry to hear that your little vacation away from work and kids did not do you much good.

You asked “is it ataxia or just me”? First, having Ataxia, a full time job and a few children surely would exhaust the most energetic person.

I am sure you realize that although people with ataxia share common symptoms, the level of these symptoms is not necessarily the same for all. If five days of sleeping did not bring you more energy, may be your doctor should start eliminating a few things. One of them could be checking your iron stores.
My iron blood level has always been normal, but recently, my doctor checked my iron stores (this is the iron stored in the bone marrow). My levels were very low and he prescribed iron infusions which improve the iron level and I noticed a little improvement in my energy level. I still am very tired all the time, but when you fight all day to keep your balance I would assume all the iron in the world would not help…

You could also have him check your adrenal levels. The adrenal glands help you cope with stress and if they overwork, they get tired and you can suffer from fatigue too.

And of course, there is the infamous sleep apnea…

These are just a few thoughts. I am not in the medical profession but I know for a fact that every organ in our body is connected to the others in one way or another and if one of these organs is sick, this can trigger a bunch of other problems. This is why it is good to have a doctor who will look at the whole picture, (usually what we call these doctors here in the States,“internists”) and who will play detective, following every possible clue.
My very best to you !
