Vision issues and Ataxia

:slightly_smiling_face: My Uncle had Cataract Surgery, it was straightforward and successful.
I’ve been experiencing eye pain and blurriness, and I’ve been told this is likely due to Cataracts. Because of my previous history of eye problems, surgery may not be advisable and could actually damage eyesight further. Due to Covid, it could easily be a year before I’m even able to see a Specialist on the NHS…

Some people with autosomal dominant optic atrophy and cataract develop disturbances in the function of other nerves (neuropathy) besides the optic nerves. These disturbances can lead to problems with balance and coordination (cerebellar ataxia), an unsteady style of walking (gait), prickling or tingling sensations (paresthesias) in the arms and legs, progressive muscle stiffness (spasticity), or rhythmic shaking (tremors). In some cases, affected individuals have hearing loss caused by abnormalities of the inner ear (sensorineural deafness).

Fortunately, I don’t have any optic nerve or retinal damage. Surprisingly, my sister, who has symptoms of SCA, also had cataract surgery. I am just wondering, if SCA has anything to do with it.

:slightly_smiling_face: This would be a good question to ask if someone had a Neurology appointment coming up.

I have the honor of going through ā€œthe changeā€ and ataxia. Both hormones and ataxia can affect vision and boy does it. I just got new glasses they were okay for like 2 days and now I can barely see out of them. But then I can barely see without them too. So I guess I’ll just be going back and forth to find what is comfortable and what isn’t. Lot of fun when you need your vision to try to keep some form of balance lol.

I was going through Perimenopause when my ataxia symptoms started…it was a very difficult time…and of course my GP put everything down to Perimenopause.
I’ve also coped with chronic eye problems…double vision-nystagmus and Oscillopsia.

It was the same for me initially, I had lots of changes in prescription because my high street Opthalmologist didn’t understand exactly what was happening to my eyes.
Eventually I was referred to a NeuroOpthalmologist, and she totally understood the problem.

Eye problems definitely make balance harder to cope with…

I don’t think cataracts have anything to do with Ataxia I had one, also a vitrectomy ( to repair vitreous leakage) plus more recently glaucoma . Just bad luck :frowning: l guess.

I’ve been diagnosed with baby cataracts. Told by doc they come with age.

True and I’m a year older than you! 80 next month. Am I the oldest in the group?

I don’t know everyones age but I don’t think you’re the oldest. Start a thread asking for their age and see what happens.

I’ve recently had Cataract Surgery…and I was hoping balance problems would improve if eyesight was clearer.
Distance vision is remarkably better but now I need reading glasses.

I’ve known for some years that Cataracts were worsening ….but it was inflammation from a previous eye condition (Iritis/Uveitis) that finally brought things to a head and led to surgery.

So glad you’ve got some improvement.
I had one done several years ago - the other isn’t ready yet but there is certaiy a difference between the two.
Take care :hibiscus:
