Vission

I recently had cataract surgery which meant a new prescription for glasses. At about the same time I was diagnosed with mild Ataxia. The prescription I was given for new glasses is useless for some activities, such as computer use and reading. My question is this, can ataxia affect vision?

Everyone is different but it is affecting mine. Blurry vision somedays. If I get too tired my eyes get bloodshot. Is it both of your eyes are just one u had surgery on? If just eye with surgery might get a second opinion from an eye specialist.

I get double vision which is corrected by my glasses
Trouble with vision having great variation throughout a day !

I had one eye done about 5 years ago and the other about two months ago. It seems to me that both eyes are being affected. Right now I am wearing an old paiir of glasses with a different prescription which seem to be better. I go back to the optometrist next week to have the prescription checked.

I know some people with ataxia have double vision requiring one eye to be covered. I personally have occasional flickering which is apparently is quite common in those with ataxia and cannot be corrected. Eye exercises help and massaging under the outer eye muscle.

I have been prescribed eye gel drops for dry eyes but I think that is due to old age!

Yes it can. Some people with Ataxia have Nystagmus (me included). Nystagmus is defined as "a condition of involuntary eye movement". In my case, I can't see properly even with glasses because the level of the condition changes almost daily - some days good, some not so good.

I can't focus on distances. I can't drive. Some days I have double vision. I can't distinguish levels of ground outside, which means I have to really concentrate on the ground in front of me when I walk. And if I'm tired, my vision is blurry.

Some days are better than others...

I can see better up close (eg: computer and reading) unless me or my eyes are tired.

I would say that either you have the wrong prescription for your glasses or you could have nystagmus.

Vision long sighted so neeed reading glasses.Ataxia jusst affected focus after 7 years.

greytdogz,

One deficiency that causes nystagmus is thiamine deficiency. Here is a article on what test to run to see if your thiamine deficient. http://www.hormonesmatter.com/thiamine-deficiency-testing-understan... If you are deficient you also need to be sufficient in magnesium thiamine enzymes need magnesium enzymes to work.

My left eye particularly give me problems (blurriness/double vision) especially when tired. I don't have Nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), as some people with ataxia do. The left side of my cerebellum is more atrophied than my right, hence more problems with my left eye. That's my theory. My eyes get bloodshot and watery frequently, although I don't know if that ataxia related. ;o)

I have problems reading, because they said that i have jumping eyes

I do have nystagmus, though just in peripheral vision. I read with interest the information about thiamine deficiency. Thanks so much for this!!
