Would like to hear from anybody who has this form of the complaint. All the best
What is anti GAD?
I’m being tested for this Dermot - are you on the ataxia UK site as well? FelingOurWay
I 'm sorry, but I still don't understand. What is anti GAD and Dermot? No. I live in the USA, so I'm not on the UK site, only this LWA site. ;o)
Hi, GAD is an anti body which causes mayhem by destroying the cerebellum bringing on ataxia symptom eg poor balance and coordination, nystagmus and the like. It also causes type 1 diabetes, arthritis and assorted auto immune issues. Plasma exchange which involves 5 days in hospital is the only treatment if not caught early enough. IvIG therapy can be useful at the start but it can be very aggressive if not dealt with quickly. But every ataxia case is unique, hence the difficulties around treatment and lack of knowledge by neurologists.
thanks Dermot -didn’t know about it being aggressive. Not got final diagnosis yet. Will keep you both posted

Not heard of Anti GAD but never surprised to hear of different types of ataxia. I know MSA is an aggressive one too.
Best wishes to you guys. Patsy

I have been told that I have Anti GADS but the dr has not told me that it is a problem. My ataxia is progressing thou … Keep having to have scans to see the. Progress of the cerebellum damage
Thanks for the explanation Dermot! Now I understand what anti GAD is, although I'd never heard of it. It's good to know there's treatment if caught early enough. Also, I appreciated you kind comment, FeelingOur Way! Guess with the frustration and challenges that ataxia brings, a positive attitude is the ONE thing I have control over...,ha! Yes, I will check out the UK site... ;o)
