Can other parts of the brain take over the function of the damaged cerebellum?

HEAR HEAR:) My son says to me: if you concentrate hard enough and want it badly enough with mindsetting you can eventually force other parts of the brain to take over the functions of the damaged cerebellum. Anyone out there who has anything to say about this OR is it just a bunch of crap?

Like for instance when people are missing their spleen, the liver and adrenals take over the function of the spleen as time goes by, at least that's what an internist once told me. So there's medical proof for that. But the body does that automatically, no mindsetting needed here.

I am thinking out loud here now: when forcing another part of the brain to take over, that would mean a lot of exercises, walking a lot and more, wouldn't it. Just to let that 'taking over' part know what you are wanting it to do. Right? But what if a lot of exercising and walking is not really an option anymore because of the exhaustion? Then forget about it altogether?? because you can't even learn a monkey tricks before teaching it how.

I'd love to hear your opinions. So shoot:):)

Hugs for you all, Elle.

Well, the cells (Purkinje) that process movement in your Cerebellum have been damaged somehow and we need to replace them!

But they are only produced in the womb when you are a new tiny 'bubs' for the 1st 10 days of life..Now they begin to develop so after about 12 weeks you'll feel the baby kicking and moving..Wonderful,hey!

Research is currently underway to get our hands on those cells,(not stem cell)but real cells from the 'Umbilical Chord' and find a way to place them into an Ataxia patient..Let's hope for success..Hey! Who said you can't teach a Monkey new tricks :-)

Hi Ozzy

Thanks for the monkey 'busy ness'. So back to the womb huh:) Sounds logical. Where did you get that knowledge?

Have a read of this,Elle..plus I surf the net looking for anything to cure this lol....

You know how Parkinsons, TBI, and even some MS patients can reverse their progress with a lot of specific exercise? I think the same strategy can work for ataxia. I've read that if you exercise a lot and do specific balance and coordination exercises (like the frenkel exercises for ataxia) you can prompt new neurons to grow close to the cerebellum. It won't be the purkinje cells that are lost in ataxia, but new neurons will grow close to the cerebellum and take up some of the function for the lost ones.

I also believe that to be true 'runner'.And also hand and eye co-ordination such as the 'computer, drumming on the table with your hands and playing written puzzles like cross-word or even better Sudoku..I'm now a 'hoot' at Sudoku..a few years back I was, like,

hello,what a dumb game!..now I iza wizz :-)

..Ozzy..

You gave me quite a read there Ozzy:) Thank you! every bit of knowledge helps.

These Frenkel exercises sound great. Thank you! This is exactly the type of thing I was hoping to learn about when I joined this site. Very helpful!

In Googling the Frenkel exercises I came across this link... might interest some people?
