Deep Brain Stimulus for ataxia

Hello,
Has anyone had DBS, and if so, what were the results? I read several NCBi reports, and it says mostly helps PD, dystonia, and Tremors. I ask because a few hospitals in my area list ataxia for DBS. I may get a consultation for their view.
Thx in advance.

DBS may be an option to treat tremor, including dystonic tremor in patients with underlying ataxia; however, gait and other symptoms may be worsened. Whether choosing unilateral, staged bilateral, or simultaneous bilateral DBS implantation(s) for ataxia syndromes, a careful preoperative risk benefit discussion should be pursued with patients and families.

:slightly_smiling_face: DBS has been mentioned previously. Type DBS in the search box to see previous references. The most positive comment I read was by someone who saw a Parkinson’s patient demonstrate the effect DBS had on them personally :slightly_smiling_face: xB

Be very careful with DBS. Although it is said to be minimally intrusive, I would proceed with caution when it comes to ataxia and the potential for undesired effects. To further reiterate Shoaib, be sure to weigh out the pros and cons of DBS. Make sure that it will target the symptom(s) that you want.
Make sure that the benefits for your condition are worth the risk. As far as I know DBS is sill in the experimental stages for some conditions.
The best will be to have a conversation with your MD or a specialist to make sure that is the best option for you.
I think you are approaching DBS from the right angle by getting consultation first.

I saw the older posts, but just hoping for any new positive info. A bit desperate :). Interesting that Stanford Medical and other top hopitals list DBS as an ataxia option. I do have tremors as well, but wouldn’t consider it unless it helped me walk.

I think at some point everyone here wishes for that magic wand that when waived, cures or provides some positive outcome. Please do keep us posted on your findings on this (DBS).
As a relatively new treatment for ataxias, and despite it’s long history in treating other diseases, it is still unclear how it works and therefore may potentially produce some serious unwanted side effects.
DBS has proven helpful for some and I hope you discover something wonderful and helpful for us all!
