Gluten ataxia - gluten symptoms after going GF

Hi

Can anybody tell me what to expect symptom wise with gluten exposure after going gluten free? I've been GF for about four months now and have had a huge improvement in my ataxia. If I'm exposed to gluten now though, my symptoms are horrendous, as in worse than ever. Does anybody know whether the reactions will decrease in severity over time, or continue to get worse?

I baked with gluten containing flour for my family yesterday and today I'm just a waste of space. I didn't even have the pleasure (albeit shortlived) of eating the baking! I have really bad nausea, I walk like a drunk, have severe nerve pain, speech and writing issues, want to bawl my eyes out and just want to crawl under a rock and die!

If things aren't going to improve, I'll have to either get the kids to do the baking, or they'll all be going GF with me.

Thanks

Poppy

Yep! This is absolutely typical reaction to going GF and then having a challenge. Dr M the neurologist who discovered gluten ataxia told me the longer the gap between the challenges the worse the symptoms.

Ill add some more to this later - my dad has just had a fall and I must go

i wonder if rice-flour would be good for baking cakes. but i am bad in the implementation of my ideas, eating the butter and eggs before baking the cake. the cakes in the shops are very seductive. Especially in Christmas time.

Bummer! I had a sneaky suspicion this might be the case.

If symptoms get worse with the longer the time period between challenges, is there any likelihood of the reactions eventually becoming anaphylactic? I'm already borderline anaphylactic to nuts.

This whole gluten ataxia thing is starting to get me down a bit. I know I shouldn't complain as I'm extremely lucky mine was diagnosed while I'm still in my 30s and the damage isn't too bad but its ruling my life at the moment. When the ataxia developed, other allergies also became apparent (potato, egg and nut) so eating is just becoming a very large pain in the backside. Some days I just wish I didn't have to eat at all!!

hi Akita!
Yes I reckon that the rice flour will work nicely in your Christmas cake!
Enjoy!

Thanks!

I and my sister had been on GF diet for almost 5 years now and had been out of having skin rash (Dermatitis Herpetiformis). Recently, I took with me GF powdered milk overseas to have some milk with my tea. But after about 12-13 days, I started having whelps through out my body. I stopped taking the powdered milk and took a short course of steroids. Back home in the US I am not having any problems with regular milk off the shelf. Anyone has any ideas as to why the GF powder milk caused me to have the skin rash?

 Is it at all possible that you may have inadvertently ingested cows milk via food.

Symptoms that can appear within minutes of having a small amount of milk include:

  • raised red bumps of skin – hives (urticaria)
  • itchy, red, weeping or crusty rash of the skin – dermatitis or eczema
  • swelling of the face
  • wheeze or persistent cough
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea.

It is entirely possible that I had cow milk with desserts that were contaminated with Gluten. I say that, because in the US I have 2% milk off the shelf without any problems. My sister, who has the same diagnosis of SCA as mine, had skin rash after ingesting GF powdered milk from the US. There must be something in the powdered milk to cause hives. But they claim it as GF!
