Goals?

I was told that because we have ataxia that we need to have a long term Physical goal and maybe many small one's that will get us there! I was wondering what everyone's goals are having ataxia?

For me Jeannie its working with Cassie and setting a target of no or as little change in symptoms over a year. I don't think she's any worse than this time last year, but I do realize any change could be very subtle. A year at a time, that's all. I can't think about how bad things may get coz they may find something before then

My goal this year is running in the 7.1 mile Falmouth Road Race in August, I've been training for months and will continue too, to get ready.

I am doing it to raise money for Dr. Schahmann's MINDlink foundation, last year we raised over 50,000 $ for ataxia research

Although I have many, my main goal is to move…this inadvertently trickles down into other goals with my various needs which sometimes seem like I’m seeking the impossible.

Hi,

Small goals are the baby steps we take to achieving larger goals. Mine include staying active, walking and going to the gym. I've never been an athlete and don't expect to become one now, but I sure want to stay mobile and on my feet. A short term goal for me is to be balanced enough to volunteer in a hippotherapy program as a horse walker.

And I plan to continue riding on the back of my husband's Harley Davidson!

I do physiotherapy in home since 2005 almost all day. I felt a little difference at first, then I did not feel much difference, but I think it would be worse if I had not done

To keep going no matter how hard it gets
And be an example to others in spite
Of ataxia.

In November I am 50 and I am having a formal party and the dress that I want to wear I have to lose at least 5 stone I will do it lost 5 pounds this week and have personal trainer each week to put me through my paces and I am doing well

Goals? To try therapeutic horse-back riding. (Has anyone?) To testify in Congress about the urgency to find help for all you polite and wonderful people, none of whom deserve this. To be able to keep up physically with friends and family. N

I agree with you Bernard - this is what I try to do (although sometime it's difficult - like at this moment - I'm tired out).

I have been dragging my feet ( humor intended) to get a membership at our local gym. The much needed spring yard trimming is almost complete. Now I have no more excuses. I only fell twice getting it done, Ha ha. Tuesday it will be done. I plan on going twice a week at first. I lost 29 pounds last year and have gained 12 back. Them high stress diets really work, LOL.

DearLoppster,

I dont think I am ready for Assisted Living, also I have a husband and live far away in another country. But I would visit and support.it. Neta

My former long term goal was climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, and it really helped me to train and do my exercises, along with a few smaller (running) goals along the way. It was a great and exhausting experience (did it last year), but now I'm a bit lost... looking for a new long term goal.to motivate me to keep as fit as possible, but I'm a bit insecure as to what I could still achieve.

Jeannie, my first goal is no shuffling feet. Then balance…whichever comes first. I had to start using a cane in the house first time yesterday and hope that doesn’t have to last.

Hi Jeannie,
My goal is to climb at least two stairs. I have been climbing stairs 6 months back and now it’s a dream. I am slowly improving and one day hope to achieve my goal. Good luck and best wishes always.

Well done Karen!

best wishes

I've never been very good at self-discipline, even before all this started. So, I know it would be in my own best interest to focus on doing as much exercise as possible and eating well.

My intentions are good but resolve is not very strong, I'm probably my own worst enemy! I must be firmer with myself!

Hi JC!

I just watched, thank you, you are an inspiration. Hopefully I'll get a firmer grip of the right way or the wrong way.

Your comment about not following advice because it comes from other people

and not something I'd thought of myself, could have hit the nail on the head!

There's so much good advice out there, coming from people who themselves have learnt the hard way.

Thank you again for the support you offer.

best wishes

Beryl

Thanks, Folky, for the great suggestion. Cycling is not really my thing (never has been) but walking would be great, I think. The whole distance would be a bit :-) too much, but I could also attempt it piece by piece I suppose. And there might be other similar hikes, that are not so long, for me out there in the UK or elsewhere! Thanks for the inspiration.

Beryl, and all of you, good luck. For me setting a goal really helps doing tedious exercises etc that are necessary to keep fit. Whilst running, for example, I kept repeating my little 'mantra' summing up my goals to keep me going. I really worked for me.

All the best,
Cristel
