Helium Festival 2013 (Ataxia Ireland)

It has been rare in the past for Co. Longford to be associated with some the best live music acts to grace Irish stages. However, for the past five years, the Helium micro music festival has put Longford on the map as one of the top festival hot spots in Ireland.

A hidden gem in Ballymahon, in the heart of Co Longford, the Helium fundraiser brings the greatest live acts that Ireland has to offer right to our door step. Smaller and lighter than Oxegen, Helium first opened its doors in 2009 and back then it was a somewhat different affair. “I remember when you used to be able to pay a donation at the door and climb trees at Helium” says one festival punter, “It is all so organised now”.

The original concept of the festival came from a group of talented individuals who pooled together in order to raise much needed funds for their good friend Thomas Colohan – who suffers from Friedreichs Ataxia. Over the years the festival has amplified into one of the best festivals the midlands has to offer. It is right up there beside other boutique festivals such as Castlepalooza and like all good things, Helium grows finer with age.

So what is it that makes Helium so special?
