I have been taking Vitamin B Complex since diagnosis at the suggestion of my doctor and have been plagued with headaches since apart from a short period when he upped my dose of Propanalol, but now the headaches are back. Mind you I have beautiful strong nails, good skin and healthy hair so the B must have been doing something.
Now what can I change to. The skin, hair and nails I can deal with, but the energy is a real problem. I am fatigued every couple of days after doing an activity not of any great exercise, just meeting friends, or going out to lunch. My doctor has refused B12 jabs and I agree now, as the headaches are crushing. Can any one advise me as to what supplement apart from glucose could help.
Dear Lisa1949, I take 300 mg of CoQ10. My neuro suggested I up it to 600 mg (300 mg am/300 mg pm), although I'm not faithful on the pm dose (sometimes I forget). Of course, always check with your doctor before taking anything. CoQ10 seems to help, although I've been on it for years. ;o)
I generally agree with what was posted. Add vit. B12 (sublingual), a complement to taurine is tyrosol, but the quickest and observable is 100-200mg. caffine as needed. Oddly, asprin will help some because it thins the blood and the system delivery works somewhat easier.----Silky
I have tried different things and asked my doctor about a low dose stimulant. The answer to this was they cannot prescribe this to someone with emphysema. I have never had emphysema and told the doctor that and he told me I used to smoke and that is the cause. I almost lost my coverage when I said that's bull---t and he got scared and ended the session. I would have dumped my carrier if I could have. The HMO is terrible with senior citizens it pays them not to treat and you cannot sue but have to arbitrate. I even tried to find a drug dealer who supplies college students to try something but no luck.
Sorry i should have said more i take 20mg coq10 daily, i get them from puriton pride on the internet and have donee so for many years . I am 48 and have had ataxia for 15 plus years
headaches are not a usual part of Ataxia that I’m aware of so nutrition wouldn’t necessarily solve this. Did your doctor say why he thinks you are having headaches? There could be many reasons for this not related to Ataxia at all.
Take sublingual B12 and recently started krill oil. Generally would say my engery OK,but ataxia tends to make you tired just living. Somedays I slèep and sleep.' As my daughter said, you are t'hinking all day, every move is a something to think out and takes extra effort,
Are you sure it's the B complex & not the side effect of the Propanalol? Co Q10 has greatly helped me with my energy level. My neuro recommends up to 1200 mg. a day. Also, you might want to try a different brand of B complex.

I have been taking propanalol for 15 years without any bad side effects. Yet the headaches started initially when I took the B Complex and continued until my med put me on a higher dose of propanalol. Then I started Vit D3 for extra energy and the headaches came back. So I have stopped b and d vits.

I've been lucky so far that I haven't had low energy, but I can tell you that I have incorporated exercise into my life and I know I always feel more uplifted after. Doesn't seem to matter what it is or how often you do it, just that I do something; stretches, walking, swimming. Find something you like to do.
