Working out? anyone?

Anyone working out with this condition?

no i am talking about serious body building kinda workout lol with diet and everything

I don't do body building but have been following the Forced Exercise theory using a passive trainer bike and had good results. I am able to do more than this time last year when I started it.

I went low carb whilst doing this and lost 3 stone (42lbs).

I have put a bid on this passive exerciser on ebay

I'm feeling left behind here!

Patsy, what is that? What does it do? :0) :0) :0)

Patsy that is NOT a passive trainer. A passive trainer is a bike or set of motorised pedals that makes your legs pedal faster than you would be able to yourself.

Only lurching about in the garden and falling into flower beds.Tried to go out for a walk hanging onto husband but legs got tired so lots of stumbles towards the end.

have added this to my watch list

I'm very big into exercising. I am seriously fit. At home I do my Bosu Ball, and Wii -Fit, and I hike, swim, and hoop dance. I just started taking an afro-brazilian dance class, and I also do a little kick boxing. I find if I don't exercise my autonomic problems and balance and ataxia just get so much worse! In fact I feel that I live most of my life like a shark in that if I don't move I "die"....almost quite literally as my breathing and postural BP get really funky when I stay still for too long and my body temp plummets BP drops, blackouts, nausea, painful paraethesia etc...Yes exercise is very, very difficult but it's worse to lie still. I have and use a balance dog and I am hoping this year will be the year I can run.

I find the more physical activity I do the better I feel. I am even surfing again.

I'm guessing you people who exercise so enthusiastically are a lot younger than me .. 1942.. lol !!!!

I do my best .. yes I can go fast and build up momentum but when I fall, I break bones!!

My intention is to try tai chi for those with health issues.

@ Phoebe - that' so cool that you surf; I would like to surf in either Hawaii or California.

Only 2 minor things are major obstacles: 1-I've never've surfed before but I know that it's pretty difficult; and 2-my balance is quite horrible currently and need to use a walker to walk.

Any suggestions on where to start and/or any teachers knowledgable on surfing for people with major balance disorders?

Surfing may be impossible for me but I want to try it as well. I just got knee board. I thought I would try that for the summer and if I can balance well enough on that then go to a long board for the fall or winter. I never know with balancing because it seems to be so connected to my vision. If I can learn to surf with out using my eyes and just go by feel .....I may be fine. Or,...maybe if I practice on my Wii enough... one day I will be able to get my vision/vestibular/proprioception all working together. The only problem I have is that my ataxia does act up in the water. I can get very spastic and or heavy(hypo). I will have to bring a friend or my husband to rescue me if I "get in over my head". ;)

while I cant really go as far as calling myself a body builder I have gotten quite buff in the past year. I'm lucky enough to live near Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago which has wheelchair accessible machines, but I'm sure I could mananage machines at a regular gym too. I also ride a stationary bike and just have the foot straps to keep my feet in place. I also do leg kicks and raises with ankle weights soo my legs arent super twiggy.

There is the Malibu board rider club and life rolls on that promoters blind and handicap surfing in SCA. I am 51. I started surfing when I was 35. Late bloomer!

Hi my son is nearly 20 and has FA, he is taking his exercise seriously as he wants to stay as strong as possible but he also wants to look good too. He is thinking of drinking protein shakes to help boost the exercise. Do any of you use them or know any reason why they might not be suitable for someone with FA.?

Patrick, how long did it take you to see and feel a difference in yourself? My son isn't impatient he just wants to feel he's doing the right things.

I'm just starting to use more weights along with my Yoga, Pilates and walking on the treadmill. I've never exercised before and always have hated it before. It took me a few months of pushing myself but I think I must have broke through that state of not wanting to move at all, now that I'm seeing how my body responds better durning the day. So I'm not quite sure what the progression is suppose to be with working out.

It seems as if all the Dr's say to exercise so I got used to them saying thatand kinda ignored them because I didn't think it was for me that I couldn't do any. But like John said I started taking baby steps. I started just with streching small amount and added one more the next week soon it was every few days. As I got stronger, I started new things. It's actually kinda fun! :0)

I log into fit Pal http://www.myfitnesspal.com/welcome/learn_more on my IPhone. It dings and helps me to remember when to eat, have water and log in my exercises. There are a few PT's there that incurrage the use of weights. In the dissusion groups I'm learning alot but find I'm still open to trying new things that seem to help to where I think I'm actually ready to include more weights. I can't do what everyone elce does so I just modify the exercises and do what I can. I'm finding that I tend to push myself much more having to log in my calories, exercises etc. I have a few work out buddies there that encurrage me.

What are you doing to work out?

Hey shelia, i would say it took about 2 months give or take to notice a visible difference and figure out the perfect routine.

Hi - This doesn't fall anywhere near body building, but it helps to exercise your core..."toss" a balloon against the wall above your waist.

Also, although not very much fun, sit-ups and push-ups keep my muscle mass toned while floor yoga (borderline fun for me)keeps me flexible and what-not.

Although I don't have one yet, I've heard great things about adult trikes if that's an option for you.
