Please forgive my rant but Ataxia really sucks!
Personally, I donāt think youāve got anything to be apologising for myself.
And if you need a safe space to rant, then why not here? Who better to rant to than others having to deal with and manage it all too. People with a lived experience.
As I say to many members āNone of us are here by choiceā¦ā and yea, it sucks. Youāve got no argument from me.
Merl from the Modsupport Team
Okā¦just to carry on ranting due to frustrationā¦
I can no longer drive, my husband canāt ā¦he broke a fingerā¦he has a hospital appointment in the Cityā¦our daughter can take him but canāt pick upā¦a taxi is extortionateā¦he may have to catch a bus back.
I want to go with him butā¦I donāt manage well with my rollator in the Cityā¦and I dread the thought of getting on a bus
Hi
I can certainly sympathise! Due to epilepsy I have never driven and my husband was diagnosed with alzheimerās a year ago and had to give up. Iām fine around the village on my mobility scooter but getting to appointments is so difficult. We are very lucky however as a local village car scheme is brilliant and will take us for appointments for the cost of the fuel
in the local town there is a Dial a ride scheme which will also transport my powerchair
Just a thought Beryl. Hospital transport may be available We have used rhe service on several occasions. Sometimes you have to wait a while for the return journey but its worked fine for us - and they will carry rollator!
OUCH. Issy may have a suggestion
Hospital transport ā¦is something to bear in mind.
As it turned out, our daughter dropped us offā¦and managed to return later to pick us upā¦very kind of herš
Then we went for lunchā¦I was distracted by my young granddaughterā¦and managed to leave my sunvisor in the restaurant
HĆ²pe ypu managed to retrieve your visor.
I always thought hospital transport only served your local hospitals but not so , its nationwide Scotland to London. Might come in useful for my annual trip upto Liverpool if no family are available
I rang John Lewis last night, and I had a call this morning to say theyād found it
I wasnāt aware hospital transport could be used āout of areaāā¦thatās interestingā¦or was that a joke
I know someone here who uses it regularlyā¦and sheās very complimentary about them
Hi Beryl
No - no joke. I met a member of the Hospital Transport team whilst waiting outside our local hospital for a friend to pick me up and asked which hospitals were covered in Shropshire. I was told it was nationwide and she often took people to Scotland, London and all areas inbetween.
When you get appointment letters from hospitals it usually gives a phone number for transport.
Glad you got visor back ok.
Take care
Issy
Hope youāre feeling better Beryl.
Iām good thank you
Iāve made progress re having Cataract Surgeryā¦it may be done within 4wks
How are things with you
BEST OF LUCK! This Ataxia thing has screwed up my life but Iām doing the best I can. Iām sure we all are.
Ataxia does get old at times!
It isā¦āsame old same oldā on a daily basis butā¦.Iām determined to be āupbeat todayāā¦
Weāre heading into Autumn and the weather here has been very disappointing, but today the sky is a clear blue and the sun shines brightly
Well here it is- nearly Christmas. Year after year we have sent cards to people we havenāt seen for years BUT not any more!
I have made a decision to phone many āoldā friends for a chat and give extra support to favourite charities - Alzheimers as my husband is a sufferer and of course Ataxia UK.
Everyone benefits I enjoy catching up on everyones news and the calls are much appreciated and many promises to keep in touch. Plus its easier to chat than write! In Britain an organisation called the Big Give doubles all contributions for a week and Ataxia UK benefited by over Ā£50,000 from 313 donations - some people are obviously mmch
Sorry caught wrong button
Much wealthier than us!
For all who celebrate Christmas enjoy
and all Best Wishes for 2025 to all. Take care
Itās so easily done
Merry Christmas
Thanks Beryl and to youā:sparkles:
CAN DO AND CANāT DO
We all know that Ataxia changes our lives and personally:
I CANāT dash around the country visiting friends but I CAN speak - or message them on phone more often,
I CANāT go snorkeling on holiday but I COULD go to water aerobics if I could get transport!
I CANāT go out walking but I CAN cover quite a distance on my mobility scooter.
I CANāT ride a bike but I CAN use my reclining exercise bike.
I CANāT do a lot of vigorous activities but I CAN enjoy my knitting etc.
And so the list goes on - - -
How about everyone elses list?
Take care
