Anyone started a hobby because of having ataxia?

I started bird watching  never thought I would do that , and watching rabbits from my window.

Strangely enough, I've also started bird watching. I've never connected it with ataxia. It's funny really as I have bad eyesight so I can't do any watching. I am also deaf so can't do any hearing. But for me, I love finding out things about them - why they do this and that and how they have developed into 1000's of different species over millions of years.

we now love birdwatching, we live on an island halfway down France on a bird reserve - so lots of birds here. Also like star gazing.

cross eyes You might be able to use a monocular - on a tripod or monopod if you are wobbly.

I am wobbly & have double vision, this works fine for me, I use a monocular or one half of a binocular.

I started to make walking sticks from wood i find when i drive the dirt country roads i my area.

I have been playing bridge online since 2009, on the BBO site. No need to go outdoors. I can play any time I feel like it, which is just about every day, any time of day:) I play with many friends all over the world. Because of the time differences there are always players on line. If you play with someone and you happen to be a GOOD team, you mark eachother as friends. When going on line you see which friends are on line already and friends coming on line. BBO is for free, it's awesome and pretty addictive:) I just love that game. So any bridgers out there, I can recommend!

I also love to knit my own designs, which is very relaxing..feeling like yoga actually. And I devour books.

Yes I have actually. I use the Wii Nintendo to do balancing exercises and I walk on my treadmill. I never had one before ataxia.

When I took Dr Clouse's classes I told him I never was an exercise person before, his reply to me was "That was the first 1/2 of your life, the second 1/2 will look different and you will." :-) So true! :-)

I didn't actually start this one because of my ataxia, but I am determined to continue it! I have been crocheting since a teenager. It's especially theraputic now and I'm making sure I keep doing it. I can't use the fine threads and make doilies anymore, and now the baby yarns and small hooks are getting harder to use as well, but I plan to keep crocheting. I've made many gifts and even have done made-to-order projects for friends. I guess my new hobby would be playing Words with Friends and Word Chums online with my Facebook or email friends! Can we call it a hobby? LOL

Sharon I think we can

What a beautiful hobby . I never noticed walking sticks until my ATAXIA an now I notice some of the older gentlemen who have them. I guess you can say the Ataxia helped me appreciate the beauty in simple things.

Bridge I never could play ,love to read books it is amazing how I never had time to do certain things maybe I will get a book on learning bridge for dummies :joy::joy::joy: then maybe all these years it will sink in.

I love the Wii games my family has banned me from playing it . I hurt my back bowling, a perfect game☹

Always liked jigsaw puzzles, now I do them a lot—especially when the weather makes going out difficult. Have also started reading more again, and playing scrabble-like games on the ipad. I’d been doing Aquacize for years but am taking a break while the facility is being upgraded…so I ride the exercise bike and recently started the seated ataxia exercises that Beryl Park had posted. I can’t do repetitive handicrafts and such because of cramping and spasms in my hands.

I think hobbies are a good idea! I meditate, read, exercise (a little), pray, and watch certain TV shows.

I haven’t did a puzzle since I was a little girl we did that as a family at the dinning room table, I had forgotten all about that ,those were some good times . I may take that hobby back up.

I love your hobbies also. I never thought of reading as one I have always loved reading and still do. I am going to look at exercise like you do as a hobby and not as some more torture to keep my body moving

I exercise with weights as I watch TV. That way it’s no big deal, and I can sit down.
