Cramps in the calves

I have been expeircing some cramps in my left calf. It has been going on for a month. I have muscle relaxers. I stretch my calf everyday. It only hurts when I walk on it. Can anyone tell me if this is like the next stage to be putting me closer into a wheelchair. I do not have the slightest idea. I also want to let you know that on the 4th I walked in the parade supporting the National Ataxia Foundation I walked a 1.5 miles in 30 minutes. I am trying to educate people about ataxia in my area.

First of all I think it's great that you are trying to educate other's by doing what your doing and even walking that far!

My exsprience with aches and pains in my legs, hips, etc is exspecially a few months back it had gotten really really bad to where I had to go see my Dr. I was at my wits end. She ran through a list of things that she recomended that I try and do before I went the route of taking meds but to take them when absolutly needed to be able to move more for a short time.

She gave me Backlofin (sp?) to use 20 mins before class and only when I really needed it so my body wouldn't start to requier it a lot) I had to force myself not to issolate and to take a Yoga class 50+ and a balancing class for seniors (even though I'm not a senior) I knew and could do alot of the moves but tryed to focus on my moving and learning one thing each class that I wasn't doing before because I either didn't know or kept forgetting to do it or that I needed to do it (hope that makes since).

One of the things she said was she asked the question like John did about am I getting 4-8 glasses of water each day and eating vegtables that have lot's of water in them. So I now have been using my timer on my IPhone a few times durning the day, that quack to remind me to drink water. This seems to be working great for me. I read that I should have 2 glasses of cold water before anythink elce in the mornings. I started choking down just one and had to add lemon for taste. I've progressed to finishing two really fast now(I also am logging my water and food on my phone on a site that tells me my calorie intake and keeps track of my water for me now) I might be adding another soon before my coffee and coconut milk and breakfast. I definatly have to do 10 mins of very mild streching. I read when my body starts to ache to nip it in the bud before the pain starts and use it as my clue to move it more so it won't get to the point of pain. It also said the effects can last up to 2 hours (sometimes less though). So that's what I do even if it's just mild. I also have to use Arnica gel (I get the genaric one because I tend to have to use allot sometimes a few times after it obsorbs from Whole Foods). She also suggested that I eat a banana daily and I do now, which helps a lot with the cramping. I hope you can get a handel on that ache/pain as natural as you can because I know it's not fun to go through. I was at my wits end with it! Good luck! :0) Please let me know if any of these things work for you! :0)

P.S. I forgot to add something I've been doing that really has made a diffrence for me long term. I've been getting a massage on my legs really hard to break up the stiffness some every few weeks. I go to massage Envy it's cheeper only $49 per massage. They had a special and I snatch up quite a few because I know when my body is starting that journey of getting more tence I try to nip it in the bud now before it gets bad. :0)

It helps my mood too! :0) Win win right? :0)

Hello Jalean
We are all very different and find different things that work for us. I had a lot of trouble with cramp and the doctor tried me on Baclofen (spelling?). It did not agree with me and so I decided to do some of my own research because I do not like taking drugs.
I discovered that organic turmeric really helped me. I take one 400mg in the morning and one at night. If I am having a bad day I take another at midday.
Always be very careful when taking anything with other medication. This is a great website for checking if things react with each other.

Of course this is purely my opinion and you might not want to try. I absolutely understand and wish you luck whatever but I thought I would let you know anyway.
All the best

Hi Lit, Thanks for this web link. This is really helpful to look things up! :0) I looked it over and I for one will be using it a lot I think. Thanks again! :0)

Oh good and I hope the turmeric works if you try it! : )

I will, thanks! Any information I gather that will help me I'm for trying to see if I'm one of those people it can help! You know it's that trial and error thing. :0)

Thanks I will try them. Where would I find the tumeric? Would it be like at a wholesale food store or organic ones?

Try hyland leg cramps pm. Drink lots of water. The pills seems to be cumulative. I start with three, sometimes I have to get up and take two more. I tried to stop taking the pills, but cramps came back in two days. The pills are organic. I also eat a bannana everday now. Keep moving, even when it’s intolerable. Keep fighting!
