the main thing to remember is, do not, like me, wait till you retire from work as it will be too late. If you make a successful application before retirement, it will continue.

For US folks, please note we are on the compassionate allowance list:

(Other conditions on this list are things like cancer and heart transplants)

The way this works is that if you are diagnosed with a compassionate allowance condition, you are supposed to automatically get social security disability. I got a lawyer from a TV commercial and gave him the listing. I still had to go in front of a judge, but it was a fairly easy process.

I am a non attorney representative who works with Disability Benefits. Anyone here that needs any orientation (questions or concerns) regarding benefits in the US, feel free to let me know (free of charge). I have been diagnosed recently with Ataxia as well and my dad (who passed away) suffered from the condition as well.

:thinking: You may be eligible for CPP disability benefits if:

  • you contributed to the CPP for a certain number of years.
  • you’re under 65 years old.
  • you have a severe and prolonged mental or physical disability .
  • your disability prevents you from working on a regular basis.

I’m in Ottawa and have been turned down once. I have appealed and awaiting a decision. I was diagnosed in June and will be 62 years old this year.
