Pain in hands and wrists

I am 47 and have SCA8. My daughter is 17 and plays violin; she plans to pursue it as a career. She has chronic hand and wrist pain that prevents her from playing.

Has anyone experienced chronic pain/problems with hands and wrists, including cramping? I myself have cramping and I am trying to survey how “widespread” it may be with ataxia.

I don’t know about cramps, but I take Tumeric, at least 900mg daily. It helps. Sorry, not much help I can be.

Hi😊I have a friend with SCA6 who also has stiffness/cramping in her hands too, it isn’t just related to one specific type of SCA. You might find medication to help on www.ataxia.org See FACT SHEETS. :slightly_smiling_face:xB

I have a similar pains. I use geranium and rosemary essential oils topically nightly on my wrists (and ankles). :slight_smile:

I was diagnosed with SCA2 in September 2008…when my birth mother was diagnosed and it was suggested her children also be tested. I was 51 at the time, and thought some of my problems were due to arthritis, especially in my knees. I have frequent painful cramping in my hands, sometimes just because. I can no longer peel apples, etc…or anything similar. Also have one particular spot in my abdomen that cramps, and my neck, legs and feet at times. :roll_eyes:

:woozy_face: I don’t have SCA2 but my knees and hips cause excruciating pain at times. I know I have arthritis in my hand, shoulder and arm but it hasn’t been confirmed elsewhere yet. It’s often hard to decide whether pain is attributed to ataxia (stiff muscles) or something else entirely. I know there are medications to try if ataxia is the cause, but at the moment I’m reluctant to try any because of potential side effects. Currently, I’m not in regular contact with a Neurologist because my review isn’t until December, and the Neurologist is about 300 miles away. Other people do actually comment that they find ‘kitchen tasks’ difficult because their hands don’t seem to work anymore. It’s possible that therapy could be helpful for you, maybe consider asking your doctor about it :thinking:
