Balance reality

When I take off my pants even when holding on to something, my balance is better when standing on my right leg and really awful when standing on my left leg. BTW, have to hold on to something for balance. Is this something that you experience?

Yes, I was told me Cerebellum was worst on my left side. Like you I have better balance on my right.

 I think Iā€™m more stable on my right leg too. I wonder if it has anything to do with being right-handedā€¦that probably sounds illogical but :woman_shrugging:

Iā€™m left-handed! It was pretty tough for me when I had left arm rotator surgery - especially when I was shaving. I was pretty good though. Only cut myself once [now I can laugh]. LOL.

Hey Beryl,
I just wanted to say that, No that is not illogical at all.

Being right-handed is sometimes medically considered right side dominant. The term is often used to describe impairments with stroke victims. For some patients the stroke can take out all sensation and control, for some it can remove some sensation and control. Establishing the dominant side can make relearning skills easier as it has a dominant learning skill. The entire ā€˜Dominant sideā€™ also has much finer motor skills too.

So, no, not illogical at all, in fact, quite the opposite

When I have one foot off the floorā€¦unless Iā€™m holding onto something stable, I always wobble. . We have a couple of steps to our front and rear doorsā€¦even using my walking stick Iā€™m unstable. I know a ramp would be helpfulā€¦
Yesterday, I was bored sitting and decided to do some weeding (:slightly_smiling_face:I used to really enjoy this) just bending and leaning on my walking stick. I managed the weeding ok, but the movement set off Vertigo, nausea and severe imbalance, so I returned to my seat

Hello, you are very lucky to be able to put on your pants because personally if I donā€™t stand up, itā€™s guaranteed to fall! Letā€™s just enjoy what we can still do and donā€™t look at the past or the future and enjoy the present!!! Stop asking too many questions!

Itā€™s probably not unusual.

I am right hand dominant however despite that my instability is worse on my right side.

Not only for balance stability, the strength of my two sides are different. One physical instructor told me that it is normal.

I received good information from the last NAF virtual conference. Go here to learn how to keep your pants up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwmcPE8NbTs&t=9s I use my suspenders.

:joy: I would never have thought of thatā€¦you just never know what can be usefulā€¦

Prior to my own brain hiccup I use to teach people with disabilities. My role was to teach them independent living skills, but I learnt much more from them about resilience and adaptation. Today, I find Iā€™m using those skills more and more ie I canā€™t complete tasks the way I could, so how else can I get it done. Lots of lateral thinking.

I had to teach a blind man how to cook in the most dangerous room in the house, the kitchen. Youā€™ve got heat, youā€™ve got sharp blades, youā€™ve got electricity and water, youā€™ve got gas and hot surfaces, but this man he knew. He used a ā€˜rocker knifeā€™ with 2 handles on a concave chopping board to keep his hands clear and the food on the board. He went to check if his frypan was hot and I thought he was going to place his hand in the frypan, but he held it above the pan and could feel the radiant heat. As Beryl says ā€œā€¦I would never have thought of thatā€¦ā€.

We all have different ways we manage and we might not think much about it or think about how we adapt, but that little bit of info from us may just be the pearl of wisdom somebody else trying to navigate this world has been hunting for. We need to share that knowledge for EVERYBODYā€™S benefit.

Hi I find heel to toe walking impossible and funnily enough I can stand on right leg - with support but not my left - Iā€™m partly ambidextrous!!
