Last night on TV, I saw a segment devoted to the new Google glasses and I was thinking to myself: what if we can find a pair of glasses or a helmet which could get our brains to think we are sitting or lying. Is this sci-fi or a reality?? That would at least deal with the swaying in ataxia, right? Does anyone know engineers in Microsoft or Google? (Bill Gates just commissioned and invented a giant Thermos for his vaccines). Neta
We would break the glasses !

How? why? Half of our problems would be eliminated! N

Hi Neta many ideas from early sci-fi novels have now become a reality. It's a brilliant idea
I saw something of a similar nature but for blind people. Sound waves bounced back and
forth from the helmet to the surroundings. It was possible for people to estimate and
visualise the size of buildings etc by the pitch, according to a scale. Sorry, best I can
describe!
Thanks!

hmmm.... interesting. Have to find an engineer. Maybe at the Technion in Haifa. N

or drop glasses because we cannot see anymore or drop food all over them !! Good idea though.Saw somebody wearing special darkened see through pin hole glasses at our main conference one year.Got a pair but forgot to keep putting them on.Felt sinister.
its just an idea... figured with all the med-tech stuff going on. Interesting about the darkened glasses.... N

Re the pin hole glasses.
A device like this has been used when I've gone for an eye check up, something to do with
double vision. I had to wear dark glasses when Iritis flared up, it caused Uvitis.
Interesting. Did the dark glasses give you stability or just made everything worse? N

The dark glasses were to block out light, nothing to do with balance.
Nothing wrong with the sight itself. But can't focus quickly enough.Everything seems to whizz past too fast making me feel as if I have just got off a roundabout. Drop things regularly as can't even see them.
Think its a muscle thing.
The idea of head gear to help with some of the issues associated with Ataxia is very interesting. The thing is though that not all Ataxians are affected by the same issues or in the same way. This creates a problem of calibration! Could such devices incorporate a calibration interface? (This is more than likely!)
As Punk kind of pointed out, many things that were once thought impossible or the wayward dreams of fanciful science fiction writers have come to be a reality. Who knows what ingenious devices may come to be in the future?
As for the 'new' google glasses, they are a new realization of older technology! I have no links as evidence at the moment, but there have been video projector glasses and 'computer monitor' glasses (witness VR (Virtual Reality)) available for some years now. The trick with the google glasses (google glass) is that they have a tiny computer inside them (think tiny ipad / mobile phone or such) that allows the user to do the things that google glass (operating system) allows and is very much portable - more so than previous systems.
Good topic Neta! :)
Interesting. So why can't the tiny computer tell the brain something, I live in Israel (though I am American) and there are many med-tech innovations here such as cameras the size of pills..... talk about sci-fi. Not sure how actualize things.Curious why the NIH tests have mostly focused on meds. I think the lack of balance is universal among Ataxians no? I have a son (big shot) in Silicon Valley. We need an engineer who knows neurology too. N

The Calibration interface would
Cope well with the daily changes

If only it were a case of replacing a faulty printed circuit board.
If only!!!
